Maceió

Maceió was the first beach of this trip of the coast of Brasil, finally reaching the white sand and clear water that we all signed up for.  And it truly met the expectations that the cover photo of the brochure made for us.  The sand was fine and light, the sun was burning hot, and the water was lukewarm.  Plus, there were gorgeous palm trees along the side of the beach that gave it an even more tropical feeling. We spent one and a half days there, soaking up the sun.

I got a tereré on the beach, I'm a tourist in Brasil, its an unspoken obligation. You'll have to look to the picture on the left to know what it is because I haven't the faintest idea what it is called in English.  Its like a braid with string in your hair?  The man who is doing it in my hair is one of many people walking the beach, making a living selling various products.  You can always find overpriced congas, sun hats, sun glasses, and sun dresses as well as artisanal work such as handmade palm leaf roses, people making dread locks, henna artists, and of course the people who make tereré.  Then there are the people selling water or food. Corn is popular as well as ice cream, açai, and coconut water.  There are even people selling barbecued cheese on sticks.  They walk around with a miniature, portable fire to make the cheese for you fresh when you want it.  I was more into the açai.
